What is Infectious Vaginitis?

Infectious vaginitis is the number one reason women visit their physician. Vaginal discharge and odor are inconvenient to the patient, because these symptoms are often recurring. Up until now, the microscope has been the main tool, used by the physician, in diagnosing many conditions. Bacterial vaginosis or BV is the most common among the several disease states known as infectious vaginitis.

QuickVue Advance G. vaginalis test is intended for use in the detection of G. vaginalis.

The QuickVue Advance G. vaginalis test is an enzyme activity test for use in the detection of Gardnerella vaginalis Proline IminoPeptidase(PIP) activity in vaginal fluid specimens from women suspected of having bacterial vaginosis. The test can be read within five minutes.

The microflora of normal vaginal fluid is characterized by a predominance of aerobic Lactobacilli. Bacterial vaginosis results from the replacement of normal vaginal flora with a mixed flora consisting primarily of facultative and anaerobic organisms, including Gardnerella vaginalis, anaerobic gram negative rods (Bacteroides spp, Prevotella and Porphyromonas), Mobiluncus spp. and others. Of the organisms strongly associated with bacterial vaginosis, only Gardnerella vaginalis and Mobiluncus spp. exhibit PIP activity.
