Studies show that high sensitivity CRP levels (those below 10mg/L) are directly related as predictors for the risk of future coronary artery disease in healthy appearing men and women, even those with normal lipids. It is now understood that the process that leads to cholesterol accumulation in the arteries is in many ways an inflammatory disorder, both cause and effect as well as effect and cause.

CRP is a component of the immune system, a set of proteins primarily made in the liver that are produced when the body is faced with an inflammatory response, such as a major infection or trauma. The blood markers that reflect this inflammatory process, or CRP, are elevated among individuals who can be at risk for future heart disease (hsCRP) as well as (CRP) other disorders such as arthritis, cancer, Alzheimers, and diabetes. The most common use of hsCRP is in the detection for risk among individuals not yet known to have a problem. It is also ideal to perform an hsCRP test alongside a Lipid Profile test for a more complete picture. hsCRP helps predict not only heart disease, but also the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, and the metabolic syndrome.

The test procedure is simply a fingerstick, with blood applied directly to the collection card. The card(s) is then mailed to the laboratory in the provided mailer. Lab turnaround time is approximately 24 hours. Results are sent to the person tested with directions for followup.
